Aims and Objectives The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Ageing Studies aims to develop students' competence, attributes and abilities to work with the diverse population of older adults and to meet the emerging needs of the ageing society. In addition to the professional knowledge and competence, the students are provided with the opportunities to develop generic attributes including independent and critical thinking, problem-solving skills, communication skills, leadership and teamwork skills, creativity and innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The programme will prepare students for careers serving the ageing population and age-related markets.
Features This programme is offered by the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (FHSS) of PolyU in collaboration with PolyU SPEED. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be granted the PolyU Academic Award.
Programme StructureStudents are required to complete 59 credits as specified below:

- "Applied Nutrition in Ageing" (3 credits)
- "Life Style and Image Design for the Third Age" (3 credits)
- "Ageing, Family and Society" (3 credits)
- "End of Life Issues" (3 credits)
- "Ethical and Legal Aspects in Elderly Services" (3 credits)
- "Ageing, Built Environment and Technology" (3 credits)
- "Policy and Administration for the Ageing Society" (3 credits)
- "The Economics of Health and Long Term Care" (3 credits)
- "Design for Ageing and Silver Industries" or "Management, Programme Planning and Evaluation of Aged Care" (3 credits)
- "Assistive Technology for Older Adults" (3 credits)
- "Research Methodology and Data Analysis" (3 credits)
- "Capstone Project" (4 credits)
- "Communication Skills with the Elderly" (2 credits)
- "General Education" (either in broadening or China studies) (2 credits)

Apart from the above curriculum, a Work-Integrated Education (WIE) will be arranged to equip students with relevant knowledge and experiences in ageing-related trades, industries and service / practice sectors during the summer break.

Students are also required to participate in at least 6 hours of non-credit-bearing co-curricular activities in order to be eligible for graduation.
Entry Requirements Applicants should possess an Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma or equivalent qualification.

Preference will be given to graduates from health and social sciences, technology, building and design, tourism, housing and property management, and business related disciplines.

Supporting facilities Most of the classes will be held at PolyU extended campuses at Hung Hom Bay and West Kowloon. Both Hung Hom Bay Campus and West Kowloon Campus are equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. Students are entitled to access the library, computing and sports facilities at both campuses. They are also eligible to use the services provided by the Health Centres at the extended campuses.

On top of the facilities at extended campuses, students are also entitled to use the facilities and services at PolyU main campus.
Teaching and assessment methods Teaching is usually conducted through lectures, tutorials and seminars. Depending on the contents and requirements of individual subject, classes may also be supplemented by practical sessions.

Students' performance in a subject shall be assessed by coursework and/or examination as deemed appropriate. Coursework may include tests, assignments, projects, presentations and other forms of classroom participation depending on the subject area
FeesApplication*: HK$150 (non-refundable)

*Application fee is waived for students and graduates of PolyU, including Hong Kong Community College (HKCC) before the close of 1st round admission (i.e. 15 April 2013). Participants of the Information Day for PolyU / PolyU-SPEED Top-up Degree Programmes to be held in March 2013 are also not required to pay the application fee.

Tuition: HK$2,500 per credit for local students; HK$3,670 per credit for non-local students in 2013/14 academic year (The tuition fee will be charged on a semester basis, prior to commencement of each semester.)

Caution Money: HK$390 (A caution money will be charged at student's first registration.)

Except for programme cancellation, all application fees paid are neither refundable nor transferable.
