Mr Derek Chan Chi On
Group Executive Director, Taifook Securities Group Limited Member, School Advisory Committee, SPEED

Mr Derek Chan, a highly experienced senior executive in the securities industry, is a current member of the School Advisory Committee. He serves to provide professional advice on the institution's strategic plans as well as its long-term development direction.

Mr Chan joined the Taifook Securities Group in 1996 and managed its newly established Corporate Finance Division, which was responsible for sponsoring the IPOs of many local and mainland companies.

Experience to Share

Having dealt with many mainland companies, Mr Chan believes that “the mainland senior executives value relationships and communication. It is essential for us to build up trust with them.”

Mr Chan is no stranger to managing the human resources of a company. When it comes to motivating staff members, he says, “We place great emphasis on developing talents within and allowing those with potential to take on a variety of jobs in order to expose them to different challenges. This will allow them to grow with the company.”

When it comes to business, Mr Chan advocates the importance of sincerity towards clients. “The period of time needed for an IPO is usually a year or more. It is vital for us to build a long-term and sustainable relationship with our clients and, as such, sincerity far outweighs monetary and economic value.”

Advice to Students

For students who are interested in pursuing a career in the finance and securities industry, Mr Chan's advice for them is to first equip themselves with broad-based financial knowledge and to develop an acute sense of the financial markets. They should then be involved with a wide variety of work and activities in order to facilitate business networking, as well as, relationship management with clients in the future.

Mr Chan adds that the work attitude of staff plays a vital role, such that young people should always ask questions when they are in doubt, and not shy away from seemingly unimportant tasks. They should also focus on improving their language skills and always strive to perform beyond the expectation of their superiors.

Motto for Life

Mr Chan recognises that the most important factor in determining his quality of life is striking a good balance between work and family. “No matter how busy I am with work, I will always reserve time for my family,” he said.

Concerning challenges in life, Mr Chan has this to say, “Remember to smile. It is highly infectious and helps me to face difficulties. Learn to master your emotions and that is the first step to solving life problems.”

Lee Man Wai, Janet
Bachelor of Arts in Business (Finance)

"Utilise your knowledge of the financial markets to increase your capital, and you will benefit from it for a life-time." This advice from my lecturer two years ago inspired me to choose the Bachelor of Arts in Business (Finance) programme at SPEED. At that time, it was definitely a challenge for me because I did not have any knowledge of the banking and finance industry. Still, I believed strongly that I would have a bright future in it.

I have now graduated and am fortunate to have entered the banking industry. At first, I was anxious of stepping into a new environment. However, I quickly adapted and got used to my job. I believe the reason for this is that I have been adequately prepared through my studies in SPEED. With my foundation firmly established during my studies, I found it relatively easy to adapt to the work now.

The greatest benefit I reaped from the SPEED programme was that it equipped me with the knowledge and skills to handle professional examinations. Professional qualifications are vital in the finance world and so, I took and completed my insurance intermediaries qualifying professional examination recently. I found it easy as I selected topics which had been covered in my BA in Business (Finance) programme. With the help of the lecturers, I was also able to understand the concepts better, which made my examination a breeze.

The finance industry is an ever-changing sector and is full of challenges. I will do my best to understand this multi-faceted, fast-changing industry.
