INTRODUCTION

This programme is aimed at professional managers, both those already working in the field of 'people management' and those who see their careers developing in that direction. The programme is designed to help managers develop the strategic, functional and personal competences required to meet the increasingly demanding roles of HR, whatever their present level of experience.

In addition to core HR concepts and techniques, the programme addresses the increasingly important interfaces between HR and other key business functions, including marketing and communications, information and communications technologies and knowledge management. Managing across these interfaces is seen as an important way in which HR can meet the key strategic aims of organizations.

STUDENT SUPPORTS

There are normally two semesters for each calendar year, commencing in February and September respectively. Each distance learning study module will be supported by face-to-face tutorials, ensuring local relevance with case studies and examples. Each module will be supported by 15 hours of tutorials (3 hours x 5 tutorials). Classes are normally conducted at weekends in the PolyU campuses. Commencement of the tutorials, however, will be subject to sufficient student enrollment number.

 

Tutorials will be conducted by full-time faculties or experienced practitioners from the industries. Students will be given access to EBS online course websites which includes web-based discussions and past examination papers with suggested answers. Students will also have access to the PolyU library and computing facilities. 

 

DURATION

The average completion time is 2 to 2.5 years and the actual completion time depends on your pace of study up to a maximum of 5 years.

 

ASSESSMENT

100% examination, each course is assessed through a written three-hour examination. Major examinations are held in June and December of each year; minor diets are held in March and August for selective subjects.

AWARDS

Programmes are structured to allow you the greatest possible flexibility. You may take individual courses to suit your own business needs. Intermediate awards can be collected en route to your final MSc, or can be studied in their own right.

 

INTERMEDIATE AWARDS

Individual Courses

You can take each of the MSc courses individually to update specific skills or to meet a specific business requirement. Certificate of Achievement will be awarded upon completion of every individual course.

Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) in Human Resource Management

The PgC allows you to matriculate onto the MSc programme without a first degree. It also provides you with a benchmark to assess your suitability on the MSc programme.

Requirements:
Passes in 3 courses including Finance and 2 other core courses.

Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in Human Resource Management

Requirements:
Passes in 6 Courses including all 5 core courses plus 1 elective.

MSc in Human Resource Management

Requirements:
Passes in 9 courses including all 5 core courses and 4 elective courses.

This MSc programme can provide an articulation path to the EBS DBA programme, upon completion of the MSc, students may apply directly to EBS for admission to the DBA.

 

GRADUATION

The MSc degree is awarded by Heriot-Watt University. The University holds graduation ceremonies in Edinburgh in July and November each year. These ceremonies provide an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements of students and also enable students (who may not have visited Edinburgh before), to come on-campus with friends and family and meet their peers and their faculty. Prior to each graduation, Edinburgh Business School holds a reception in the school which was proved extremely popular with students.

 

ADMISSION CRITERIA

To qualify for entry to this MSc applicants must hold at least one of the following qualifications:

First or second class honours degree of Heriot-Watt University, or other university or institute of higher education, recognized by Heriot-Watt University

Meet the requirements for the EBS Postgraduate Certificate in Financial Management by obtaining passes in three core courses, one of which must be Finance

 

Special routes based on professional experience:

Non-degree holders with other combination of experience and qualifications may enrol as a visiting student. He/she will become a matriculated university student after passing the PgC stage.

 

 

EXEMPTION / CREDIT TRANSFER

-

Heriot-Watt MBA graduates are permitted a maximum of four credit transfers for courses completed in the MBA and which form part of the MSc programme.

-

A maximum of one exemption is granted for an undergraduate degree majoring in a subject relevant to one of the core courses, in this case, a bachelor¡¦s degree in HR may lead to an exemption from the Human Resource Management course.

-

Other relevant professional qualifications, obtained by examination, within 5 years of application, may lead to a maximum of two exemptions.

TUITION FEE

HK$12,250 (HK$12,500 from 18 Jun 2012) for the course fee and HK$1,750 for the examination fee per course (which is subject to review each year). Tuition fees are payable by installments prior to the commencement of each semester. The course fee covers access to course to course materials, past exam papers, online interaction with EBS faculty, local face-to-face tutorials, pre-exam revision, and the use of the libraries and computing facilities in the PolyU campuses.
